How to fill it in
This template is envelope budgeting in a spreadsheet — you give each category money up front, then watch it draw down as you spend. Here's the flow:
- Set up your categories — On the Setup sheet, rename the ten categories to match your life (Housing, Groceries, Transportation...) and give each a starting balance — the money you're assigning to it. Say $1,350 to Housing, $600 to Groceries, $250 to Dining Out.
- Log transactions on the month sheet — Open the sheet for the current month (Jan-Dec) and enter each transaction: a negative amount for spending, a positive amount for income or a deposit. A $78 grocery run goes in as -78 under Groceries.
- Watch the balances — The Category Balances table at the top recalculates automatically: starting balance, spent, and remaining, plus a status flag (On Track, Running Low, Almost Gone, or Overspent) so you can see at a glance which envelopes are getting thin.
Next month, switch to that month's sheet and set each category's starting balance again — a fresh envelope for a fresh month.
